Guild of Legends: Rise of the Unbound Ch 3/50

Forming Alliances with Noobs

The clamor of voices echoed through the crowded square of Eldara’s Gate as I surveyed the dense cluster of players surrounding me. The sprawling town was alive—a veritable hive of activity humming with excitement, trepidation, and laughter all tangled together. After my initial dungeon crawl, I’d felt the sting of isolation gripping me, urging me to form a team. If I was going to take on Lord Nethrak and the guilds intent on crushing the weak, I needed muscle, strategy, and, above all, trust.

“Okay, Ethan, think.” I rolled my shoulders back and pressed my palm against the rough stone wall behind me, the coolness a slight comfort in the midst of chaos. The sun drenched the town square in golden light, while the scent of baked goods wafted from a nearby stall—a vendor selling “Haven Rolls,” both a hearty snack and status-boosting morsel. I could use a few of those before diving headfirst into danger.

But time was ticking, and I needed more than just snacks. I was gathering the pieces, trying to figure out how to construct a proper team. My thoughts turned to the players I’d encountered; a pair that stood out among the flurry of newcomers. They had that spark, the audacity to take risks, and a nonchalant confidence. I’d overheard their banter amidst the other rookies, arguing over their lack of healing supplies and channeling their desire for glory.

I made my way toward them, the chatter fading into the background as I approached. The duo's banter was animated, but as I got closer, a pause fell over them. It was time to step in, to prove I was more than just a solo player.

“Hey!” I called out, lifting my hand in greeting. “You two look like you’re up for an adventure.”

The woman, a rogue with dark hair tied back in a neat ponytail, raised an eyebrow. “What do you want, Blaze?” She had a sly smirk on her lips—a hint of challenge. Lyra Voss. Memories of the tutorial dungeon flashed back, and I recalled her deft movements and sharp wit.

“Ethan,” I corrected, trying to match her sharpness with my own bravado. “I need a team if we’re going to hit the dungeons hard. You interested?”

Her gaze flickered to her companion, a towering fighter who looked like he could cleave a rock in half with his bare hands. He grinned, showing off a set of chipped teeth that gave him a wild edge. “What’s the catch? Last time I checked, you weren’t the only one capable of taking down dungeons.”

“True,” I replied, I couldn't quite catch my breath. “But I’ve got some strategies up my sleeve that’ll help us make a mark before the higher-level players sweep through and take everything. Together, we can nail those low-level bosses and get some serious loot.”

“Loot, you say?” Lyra’s voice chimed, that trademark sass creeping back into her tone. “Not half bad. But I want to know how you plan on keeping us alive when the mobs come charging at us.”

“Simple,” I said, gesturing emphatically as I outlined my vision. “We operate in sync. You focus on the sneaking while I lead tactics. If we flank with your speed, we can manage to take out multiple mobs before they even notice us. And for the final knockout, I’m thinking we take turns drawing aggro as our health levels fluctuate, weaving our skills together to minimize downtime.”

Lyra raised an eyebrow, a mix of intrigue and skepticism on her features. “And if one of us gets whacked during the lead-up?”

“If that happens, I’ll cover you. I’ve buffed my skill in the tutorials,” I assured, feeling the fire of confidence build within. “We can get through these low-level dungeons with minimal casualties and massive gains. Trust me, as long as you don’t charge in alone, we’ll be fine.”

The giant beside her scratched his chin, deep in thought. “You made some solid points,” he said, a grin splitting his face wider. “I’m in. You’re leading this operation, Ethan.”

“Fantastic!” I shot back, emboldened. “Welcome aboard, rock star.” The trio was forming—Lyras and I, with our ambitious rogue’s flair, and Jarek, the hulking fighter with an all-or-nothing zeal to mend the numbers between us.

“Let’s hit the Lowlands Dungeon then,” I decided, glancing at the glowing portal shimmering in the distance. A route guaranteed to give us experience and, if I placed the bets right, decent loot too.

The moment we entered the dungeon, Neither of us moved. The smell of damp earth, petrichor mixed with a musty musk, wafted over us. Dim torches flickered along stone walls, casting dancing shadows as we tread carefully onto the ancient floor.

“Stick together,” I ordered, feeling an adrenaline rush surge through me as I hefted my weapon. “Lyra, scout ahead. Jarek, hang back; if we run into trouble, be ready to step up and shield us.”

“On it,” Lyra whispered, her movements flowing like water as she crept toward the shadows ahead.

Jarek and I positioned ourselves at the center, allowing for better coverage. My heart thumped in sync with the rhythmic thudding of footsteps reverberating off the walls. Each creak of the ground below ignited my senses. This was danger, this was risk. The thrill of battling mobs churned my stomach but sent excitement rushing through me.

“Here we go,” I murmured, trying to relax my nerves. Suddenly, the silence shattered like glass.

“Enemy detected!” A system prompt blared in my mind as darkness erupted in the form of a lumbering goblin. Its skin was a sickly greenish hue, mismatched armor pieces hung loosely around its frail frame, and it bore a wickedly curved dagger that gleamed with malice in the dim light.

“Jarek!” I shouted, as rushes of instinct took over. “Get between me and that thing!”

With one swift motion, Jarek stepped forward, his massive sword raised high. “Let’s carve it up!”

Lyra slinked around the goblin, her form a dark shadow among the stones. “Distract it,” she hissed, just before ducking low and launching a precise strike to the goblin's midsection.

“Got it!” I roared, charging forth while Jarek engaged with raw might, swinging his sword with fierce determination. The goblin sank its dagger into Jarek’s side, but the warrior roared back, slamming his shoulder into the creature.

“Keep it steady!” I called, maneuvering beside Jarek and slicing at the goblin’s leg; a precise sweep from one of my abilities earned me a slight advantage.

Lyra struck again, darting in with rapid efficiency, turning the tide as my tactical assessment proved on point. The goblin staggered, its mouth forming a twisted grimace.

“Finish it!” I yelled as it cornered against the wall, giving its back to us.

In a final strike, Jarek slammed his sword down, cleaving through flesh and bone with a mighty roar. The goblin crumpled to the floor, and a satisfying pop of loot items exploded into the air, glittering before us.

Collecting myself amid the brief pause, I beamed at my team. “Not bad for a first run, right? We work well together!”

Just then, the ground shook beneath us, and a rumble echoed from the depths of the dungeon. A door creaked open further along the hall, revealing the glorious glimmer of light that beckoned all adventurers.

“What was that?” Lyra asked, eyes wide as she exchanged glances with Jarek and me. “Is that supposed to happen?”

“Not at all,” I replied, caution creeping into my voice. “Let’s check it out. There might be legendary loot behind that door.”

The three of us moved as one, adrenaline coursing through our veins. With every step, an electric thrill burst within me, and I couldn’t help but smile. This was the beginning—the journey was unfolding beautifully, with danger lying just around the corner.

As we neared the glowing door, light seeping from the edges, I felt the System’s familiar pulse resonate within, a signal hinting at a challenge beyond anything we had faced thus far. But the pull of treasure and glory wagered by unknown threats thumped in my chest, urging me forward.

“Ready on three?” I asked, catching my breath. “One, two—”

Suddenly, the door swung open, revealing a cavernous room filled with towering pillars and draped in mystery. Thrumming energy tinged the atmosphere, and the floor was lined with treasure chests—their gilded surfaces reflecting the light like jewels.

“Three!” I finished, adrenaline hitting hard as we entered together.

But then the chill touched my spine, as shadows spilled from my peripheral vision. Above us, the figure of a menacing creature emerged, outlined against the light. Massive wings unfurled, and it let out a roar that reverberated through my very soul, quiet monstrous power filling the space.

“What the hell is that?” Lyra gasped, backing away instinctively.

“Whatever it is,” my voice trembled with urgency, “it’s our next challenge.”

Time slowed as I locked eyes on the creature, and I knew in that moment, every ounce of strategy I’d prepared would be critical.

“Position yourselves!” I barked, adrenaline shooting through my veins as the monster roared again, swooping down for a vicious attack.

Life or death laid ahead, and I was ready to rise to the occasion.
