Stats and Skills: The Basic Interface
The morning sun streamed through the half-drawn curtains, but it provided little warmth to the shivers creeping down my spine. I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the translucent interface hovering in front of me. The brightness of my stats vibrated with a surreal glow—here lies a gamified world I had never asked for, but one I was now undeniably thrust into.
“Okay, let’s see what you’re all about,” I murmured, my fingers trembling with trepidation as they hovered over an unfamiliar command. A soft beep resonated as I selected the Stats tab.
Name: Leo Turner
Class: Herald of Time
Level: 1
Health: 100
Mana: 50
Strength: 10
Agility: 12
Intelligence: 15
Endurance: 11
Charisma: 18
“Herald of Time?” I repeated, brow furrowing. I scanned the interface again, half-expecting to find a hidden gem of insight. There didn’t seem to be anything else about my class. It was like a mystery still waiting to unfold.
A flicker of excitement ignited within me. “So, what exactly can I do with this ‘Herald of Time’ thing?”
I leaned back against the wall, my mind racing back to my gaming days—tactics and stats balancing like a finely-tuned machine. I could practically taste the adrenaline building, the promise of some epic adventure just around the corner.
“Unique class means unique skills,” I whispered to myself, fingers dancing as I navigated to the Skills tab. The screen flickered, bringing up a list that sent tremors of exhilaration through me.
Skills:
- Time Sight (Passive): Allows the user to perceive the flow of time, granting heightened situational awareness.
- Temporal Echo (Active): Create a duplicate self for 10 seconds. This duplicate can perform one action before disappearing. 1-minute cooldown.
- Momentary Retreat (Active): Instantly return to a position within 10 meters. 3-minute cooldown.
As I absorbed the information, I couldn’t contain a laugh. “What the hell? This is incredible!”
“Hey, nerd!” a voice called from outside, breaking my revelry. Mira’s voice, sharp yet playful, rang out, pulling me back to reality. I sighed, knowing she was probably leaning against my door with that amused smirk I’d grown quite fond of.
“I’m coming!” I called, shaking off my incredulous joy. The stats were impressive, but it felt like jumping into a pool without checking the depth—thrilling yet unnerving. The only way to really understand what I could do now was to dig in.
As I stepped out of my room, the scent of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the air, mixing intriguingly with the faint aroma of the cherry blossoms outside. The sun played through the leaves, casting dancing shadows on the wooden floor.
“Who knew you were such a hermit?” Mira teased, her dark hair cascading over her shoulder, draping against her worn leather armor. She stood with her arms crossed, her sapphire eyes sparkling with that familiar challenge.
“Yeah, well, I had a lot to figure out,” I retorted, motioning to the floating screen hovering just beside me.
“More like daydreaming,” she scoffed, stepping closer and glancing at the interface with genuine interest. “What’s ‘Herald of Time’ supposed to mean? You aren’t going to be some child of destiny, are you?”
I felt a rush of warmth creep up my cheeks as I realized that sharing this strange awakening with her stirred both excitement and nerves. “I—I really don’t know yet. But I’ve got some pretty cool skills.”
“Cool skills?” she repeated. “You’d better show me how cool, Turner. We have some beasts to hunt.”
That declaration pulled me back from the haze of doubts lingering in my mind. “What do you mean?”
Her brows arched, as if I’d asked the most absurd question. “Ready for your first real challenge. You can't just stand here with your head in the clouds. There’s a pack of wild Fanged Hounds roaming near the old mill. We need to thin their numbers. Plus, you’ll earn some XP!”
“Fanged Hounds?” I echoed, suddenly feeling the weight of my own unpreparedness. “Why don’t we just stay here, level up a bit with those skills before diving into the fray?”
Mira chuckled, tilting her head. “You can’t level up if you just hide behind a screen all day. It’s about time you learned that actions speak louder than stats.”
“Fine,” I relented, swallowing the mixture of excitement and anxiety. “Let’s do this.”
Stepping instinctively closer to her, I felt the rush of adventure fill the gaps left by uncertainty. “But if I get eaten, I’m haunting you for life.”
Her laughter danced in the air as we left my apartment and stepped into the midday sun. With a shove of adrenaline, I felt the weight of the impending encounter push against me, the promise of thrill rolling through my veins.
We trekked down our worn path to the slightly overgrown street leading to the outskirts of the city, where the harsh sounds of civilization softened to the whispering hum of nature. The scents were heady—wildflowers blooming in the fields next to us, mingling sweetly with the earthy undertones of cracked soil and distant trees.
“Stay focused, Leo,” she called, keeping pace with her warrior’s grace. “Fanged Hounds aren’t just your average rabid mutts. They’re vicious, smart, and their bite can take chunks out of you.”
Staring ahead, I felt my chest felt tight. The adrenaline was a surge in my chest, almost intoxicating. “Yeah, thanks for that cheery reminder.”
As we neared the abandoned mill, I could see remnants of dilapidated wood and broken stone. An unsettling silence blanketed the area, a palpable tension knitting the air like a tightrope ready to snap. “Where are they?” I whispered more to myself than to her.
Mira gestured to a shadow flitting between the trees nearby. “There’s always one on watch. Stick close, and let’s find that pack.”
Then it happened—a hush fell over the air, and a low growl rumbled in the distance. My senses heightened; my pulse quickened as I clicked through my options. Did I really want to test my skills for the first time against a creature that could probably take my face off?
“Now would be a good time to use Time Sight,” Mira urged, her voice low and steady.
I concentrated, drawing upon the skill like a song in my mind. As the world slowed, I caught the shift of shadows and the flicker of movement just beyond the trees. I could see their forms—muscular and sinewy, eyes gleaming with intelligence and primal hunger.
“Three of them,” I said, my voice tight but firm. “Large, with jagged teeth. I can see their paths; they’re on alert.”
“Perfect.” Mira exchanged a glance with me—one part encouragement, one part command. “Let’s make our move, but stay behind me.”
With a nod, I slid behind her as she darted forward, drawing her blade. Fear flickered within me, but there was an exhilarating spark at the same time. I was ready to finally put my class to the test.
As we approached the hounds’ territory, the growls morphed into barks, echoing like thunderclaps. They lunged from their hiding spots, sleek and powerful as they zeroed in on us.
“Now!” Mira shouted, bringing her blade down with ferocity upon the first hound. The beast yelped, staggered, and then turned its snarl upon her. I felt my heart race.
I had to act. “Temporal Echo!”
Before I could even comprehend what was happening, a duplicate of myself manifested beside me, fists clenched and poised. The hound charged me, snarling, and my clone stepped in front, intercepting the blow that could have sent me sprawling. The clone’s punch connected with a sickening thud, and the beast yelped in surprise.
It staggered back; I could barely keep up with the confusion of it all. But that was the beauty of my class—the fluidity of time and space. If I strategized properly, I had a fighting chance.
“Now, Leo!” Mira yelled as she expertly dodged another hound's snapping jaws.
Switching gears, I realized my clone was also out of time. I felt my sense of urgency compel me. The second hound was slicing toward me as I sidestepped, focusing my energy. “Momentary Retreat!”
In an instant, I flickered backward, avoiding its vicious teeth and landing safely behind Mira, who was grappling with the first hound.
“Nice moves!” she shouted, flashing me a grin, blood splattered on her leather armor. That fierce smile sent adrenaline coursing through my veins. I felt a thrill of confidence building within me.
“Let’s finish this!” I hollered, determination fueling my next decision. Temporal Echo had a cooldown, but now I could unleash my first real strike. I’d play to Mira’s strengths and cover her even as she supported my own.
With all my focus, I slipped forward, drawing the edge of my new resolve as I called upon my skills again. Momentary Retreat! This time, I leaped forward, flying past Mira and slamming my fist down on the second hound’s back.
The snap of bone and the echoing growl filled the air as it crumpled beneath me. The final hound, angered by the sight of its fallen brethren, turned toward me.
“Leo, look out!” Mira yelled just as the beast lunged.
Instinct kicked in. I twisted sideways and barely avoided its snapping jaws, feeling the hot breath seep past my skin. With a surge of energy, I felt it: I could use Time Sight again. Everything slowed. Each moment was stretched thin, every second palpable.
In that split-second, I saw the weaknesses—the beast’s vulnerabilities unfolded before me in perfect clarity. I dropped down and kicked upward right into its gut just as its mouth opened for another attack.
A howl that echoed through the trees filled my ears, and I saw it stagger, stunned. Underneath the adrenaline high, a rush of victory surged through me.
Sweat dripped from my brow, but I barely noticed it. One final move, and this fight would end. I summoned my energy, and just as the hound’s head jerked back to snap at me again, my fist connected with its temple.
The world went silent. The creature fell, defeated.
Breathless, I pulled myself back, adrenaline coursing through me. I turned slowly, heart racing, to see Mira standing over the last hound, her blade poised, chest heaving—a true warrior.
In the aftermath, as the sounds of battle dissolved into silence, notifications flooded my screen.
Congratulations! You have completed your first battle!

I couldn’t contain the ridiculous joy that spilled from me. “Yes! I leveled up!”
“Don’t get too cocky,” Mira quipped, but I could tell she was impressed. “Let’s head back before more show up.”
With a laugh bursting from my lips, I nodded, my hands shaking with excitement and adrenaline still coursing through me. The thrill was intoxicating. “Let’s go, partner! I have a feeling this is just the start!”
As we trudged back through the trees, my mind buzzed, exhilarated by the new experiences, the unique skills at my disposal, and the potential of what lay ahead. I could feel it—the world of adventure had only just begun to unfold, and I was ready to seize every moment.
And then, the system interface flickered again with an ominous alert.

My heart raced, drawing me toward the unknown.
“Mira,” I gasped, “we’re not done yet!”
The dungeon door sealed behind them. There was no going back now.
