System Awakening: The Unique Class Ch 13/50

Trial by Combat: The Guardian's Challenge

The air was thick with tension, a metallic tang clinging to the back of my throat as we stood before the looming entrance of the Guardian’s arena. I could feel the weight of my team’s anticipation, each of us fidgeting, readying ourselves for the battle ahead. The sun broke through the storm clouds above, illuminating the arena's ancient stone walls that seemed to pulse with energy. This was it—the Trial by Combat.

Mira paced beside me, her brow furrowed in concentration. “We’ve trained for this. Remember the strategy we developed?” she said, her voice low but firm. I could hear the underlying nerves in her tone, just enough to let me know that she felt the stakes as acutely as I did.

“Yeah,” I replied, my mind racing through the various maneuvers we’d practiced for weeks. “Stick to the plan. We pull aggro, let you go all-in from the flanks with your skills. Everyone has a role, and we’ll use the environment. That’s what we’ve drilled down on.”

As I spoke, the massive stone door creaked open, revealing the arena within. The stench of damp earth and moss hit me like a wave, mingled with something distinctly sour. I shook off the unease creeping up my spine and stepped through the entrance, something clenched in my chest. There it stood: the Guardian. An amalgamation of rock and ethereal light, the creature towered above us, its eyes glowing a menacing emerald green.

“Welcome, challengers,” it boomed, its voice reverberating within the cavernous space. “Prove your worth, or fall to oblivion.”

“Stay sharp!” I shouted, my voice steady amidst the heightened atmosphere. “On my mark—”

“Let’s freaking do this!” Mira interrupted, bursting into a sprint before I could finish. I twitched in surprise, but adrenaline surged through me at her impulsive courage. We couldn’t waste a moment.

As she darted ahead, I shouted commands to our team. “Kelsey! Ciro! Move to support her! Keep the healing potions ready!”

They followed her, their weapons drawn. Kelsey, our skilled healer, slung a potion around her waist while Ciro, the heavy-hitter, hefted his massive axe and leapt forward.

I lagged back, monitoring the situation. The Guardian swung a massive fist made of jagged stone at Mira, but she rolled under the blow, drawing the dagger hidden at her waist. She lunged at the creature’s leg, aim steady, finding a chink in the Guardian’s defenses.

A loud crunch echoed as her blade connected, a moment of triumph that filled me with a surge of reassurance. But just as quickly, it turned to dread when the Guardian bellowed in rage, thrusting its arm down with deadly force. She barely dodged to the side, the ground quaking beneath her as dust and debris exploded into the air.

“Step back!” I called to her, plotting the arc of the fight in my head. The Guardian had revealed its intent with that swing—it wouldn’t waste any energy on soft, unguarded strikes.

Ciro charged in, swinging his axe with deadly precision, striking repeatedly at the Guardian's exposed flanks. Each hit reverberated against the stone creature, sending shockwaves through the ground. “This thing hits like a truck!” he yelled, an exhilarated grin spreading across his face. “Come on, show me what you’ve got!”

“Faster, team! Keep it off balance!” I urged, my pulse jumped in my throat. The Guardian swiveled its attention toward Ciro, momentarily losing track of Mira, who deftly maneuvered into position once more.

She leapt, a blur of movement, and drove her blade into the Guardian's knee. “It’s vulnerable there! Keep it distracted!” she shouted, adrenaline fueling her every word.

Gritting my teeth, I felt the familiar energy harnessing within me, calling upon the strategic command skill embedded in my class. Time slowed down as I assessed each member of my team, their striking movements soon synchronized into a rhythm that would either seal our victory or spell our doom. “Focus fire in three…two…one!”

“Now!” Mira bellowed as we hit the creature together.

Kelsey’s healing light flickered around us, keeping morale high and ensuring our health remained intact. Her voice chimed like a bell, “You can do it, guys! Let’s take it down!”

As if responding to our combined rallying cry, the Guardian staggered, retreating slightly. It was beginning to recognize the imminent threat, and I could almost sense its cunning recalibrating before us as it prepared to retaliate.

“Keep pressing! Don’t give it a chance to recover!” I hollered, pushing my teammates onward as I flung a tactical bomb at its feet—a burst of blinding light and sound. The creature roared once again, its focus momentarily diverted.

The opportunity hung in the air like ripe fruit, and I seized it. With a quick mental command, I activated my newly learned skill, Tactical Insight. Instantly, a diagram of the battlefield sketched its way into my consciousness, forming a strategic overlay of the Guardian’s weak spots and our combat effectiveness.

“Hit it here!” I indicated with my fingers, highlighting its core. “With all you’ve got!”

I felt the tension in the air, crackling with potential. One swift movement, and the tide could turn in our favor. Sweating, gripping my weapon tightly, I charged alongside Mira, thrusting my sword deep into the Guardian's chest as Ciro and Kelsey coordinated a flanking attack from both sides.

The ground shook violently as the Guardian let out its final howl. I gasped as the intense energy of our combined assault roared through me; the force of it sent tremors up my arm and down my spine, almost paralyzing in its raw power. I pushed through, knowing we hadn’t just fought for survival but for growth.

One instant later, the Guardian crumbled, bits of stone raining down around us, chiseling the air with the sounds of destruction. It fell to its knees, defeated, causing the ground to shudder beneath its weight. We stepped back, gasping for breath, anticipation pulsing through our veins.

The dust began to settle, and in the center of the shattered remains, an ethereal glow emerged. I ventured forward, curiosity piqued as a small stone artifact took shape, pulsating with light. As I reached down, warmth enveloped my fingers, a stark contrast to the cold stone around us.

“What is that?” Mira whispered, joining my side.

“I don’t know,” I admitted, awe flooding my senses. “But it feels... powerful.”

With cautious fingers, I picked the artifact up, instantly feeling energy coursing through me. My heart raced as notifications pinged in my mind, the screen illuminating the air like a hologram.

Congratulations! You have defeated the Guardian of the Arena.

Experience gained: 10,000.

Level Up!

Suddenly, the influx of power overwhelmed me. The fade from victory washed away any doubts. I had tapped into a new height, pushing through the ceiling I never knew existed.

New Skill Unlocked: Amplified Strategy. You can now transpose battlefield events into real-time tactical overlays for your allies.

“Leo!” Kelsey cried, pumping a fist into the air, her excitement contagious. “We did it! You’re incredible!”

I grinned, feeling a rush of pride. “We all did it.”

Mira stepped closer, her fierce gaze holding mine. “Was that your plan all along? Sacrificing yourself to charge in with the bomb?”

“Something like that,” I said, feeling my cheeks flush. “We have to keep pushing ourselves, right?”

Before she could respond, I turned my focus back to the artifact glowing in my palm. Something shifted within it, almost as if it could sense our collective energy, drawing me deeper into its mystique.

Just then, a chill swept across the arena, a malicious presence crawling along my skin. I glanced around, paranoia igniting as the shadows flickered unnaturally.

“What is that?” Mira asked, instinctively stepping closer to me.

Before I could respond, a voice emerged from the depths of shadow. “You thought you could best my Guardian? You are fools to think you could defy me.”

My heart dropped as I recognized the sinister cadence. Rylan Voss materialized from the twilight, dripping with malice, each word dripping with contempt. “The time for your reckoning has come.”

“No way,” I breathed, realizing we were still very much in the thick of danger.

The artifact pulsed in my hand, its light flickering ominously in tandem with the dread gathering in the air. We were far from done; this battle was simply the beginning.

“Prepare yourselves!” I shouted, adrenaline surging once more, as Rylan raised his hand, summoning darkness—threatening to engulf us all.

This time, we wouldn’t go down without a fight.

The notification blinked red. He’d never seen that color before.
