Level Up: Survival of the Strongest Ch 6/50

Bonds Forged in Battle

The dank smell of mold and earth filled the air as we navigated deeper into the dungeon, our footsteps echoing on the rough stone floor. I could feel the moist chill that clung to the walls, a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in the shadows. Maya moved beside me, her quiet agility cutting through the stillness like a whisper. I could almost hear the rhythmic thrum of her heartbeat as she focused, her dark hair flickering like a shadow whenever the torchlight caught it.

"This section is designed for ambushes," she muttered, glancing toward a narrow passage that cut off to our left. I took a moment to scan the surroundings, my instincts kicking in. The dim light illuminated carvings on the stone walls, symbols that hinted at the traps hidden within the depths of the dungeon.

I gripped the hilt of my sword, the solid weight grounding me. "You should take point if you can be stealthier," I suggested. I respected her skill as a rogue; she seemed to glide through the darkness where I could only stumble.

With a smirk that hinted at playful defiance, she replied, “And miss all the fun? Where’s your sense of adventure, Alex?”

“Several feet ahead of me, likely about to spring a trap. You’re welcome to take the lead after that.”

With a light chuckle, Maya slipped past me and moved silently ahead. I admired how she flowed through the shadows, the edges of her cloak trailing behind like smoke. Every now and then, she glanced back at me, gauging her distance from the growing danger.

Moments later, we reached a wider chamber, its ceiling arching high above. A flickering torch on the wall sputtered weakly, accompanied by the distant drip of water somewhere nearby. As my eyes swept the room, they landed on the remnants of what had once been an altar—a stone slab adorned with old, weathered masks, each depicting fear and madness.

“Something tells me this used to be the ritual site for sacrifices.” Maya’s words were barely a whisper, but the weight behind them reverberated through the air.

“Great,” I muttered, scanning the shadows. “Just what we need.” The last thing I wanted was to encounter the sort of twisted creatures summoned by dark rituals. But the dungeon thrummed with energy, and we could both feel it, like an electric pulse urging us forward.

“Let’s focus on the task at hand,” Maya said, a hint of determination darkening her words. “We can worry about the disturbing history later.”

Just then, a low growl echoed through the chamber as shadows began to shift. I narrowed my eyes, gripping my sword tighter. Two hulking creatures emerged from the dark—twisted crossbreeds of wolf and shadow, their eyes glowing with an eerie green malevolence. The beasts prowled closer, their claws scraping the ground with a sound that crawled under my skin.

“Looks like we have company,” I said, a rush of adrenaline flooding my system.

“I'll distract them,” Maya said, already slipping into a crouch. “Just keep your sword ready.”

Just as I started to strategize, one of the beasts lunged at me with a feral snarl. Time slowed as I felt air rush past, my instincts flaring to life as I sidestepped, barely avoiding its teeth that could easily shear bone. The creature slammed against the stone wall, shaking dust from above.

With a flash, Maya darted in, her dagger glinting as she plunged it into the creature's flank. It howled in pain, twisting to bite down, but she was already dancing out of reach. The second beast charged at her, but I was ready. I lunged forward, drawing on the skill I had unlocked during my last fight, activating my “Warrior's Charge.”

I aimed a heavy blow toward its shoulder, and my sword struck true. The creature yelped, its momentum derailed as I sent it sprawling onto its side. The echo of the impact filled the chamber, reminding me of the cracking twigs underfoot, both satisfying and gritty.

“Nice move!” Maya shouted, her admiration infused with urgency. She darted over to the first beast I had distracted and aimed a diagonal slice at its throat. Blood gushed, staining the stone floor. Desperate but determined, it clawed at her, but she was already back, her footwork fluid as she repositioned.

I swung again, aiming for the ribcage of the second beast, feeling the resistance against my blade. It howled, a sickening sound that skittered along my nerves. The distance between us seemed to shrink with each moment, every breath filled with the metallic taste of battle.

“Watch your right!” Maya shouted. I had seen the movement out of the corner of my eye but had no time to react as the first beast surged forward in a last-ditch effort from the ground. Its claws raked across my arm, pain blooming like fire.

I grunted and retaliated, thrusting my sword through its chest. The beast’s body convulsed, then fell limp at my feet. I took a deep breath, the taste of copper flooding my mouth as I regained my stance, adrenaline choking out the pain.

Maya was on her feet now, her eyes narrowed in focus, every bit the expert combatant. The second beast was almost dead, gasping as it struggled against its own strength. With a quick motion, Maya flung one of her smoke bombs at it, and in an instant, the room filled with thick, black smoke.

“Cover your eyes!” she cried, and I did just that, squinting against the sudden darkness. I could hear her moving, silent as a shadow, and within moments, unmistakable crunching sounds filled the air.

When the smoke began to clear, I opened my eyes to see her crouched over the prostrate body of the beast, her blade glistening and red.

“Okay, I think I’m starting to appreciate your sense of fun,” I said, watching her run a hand over the creature’s body, searching for loot.

“There’s more where that came from. Let me see what they drop.” She dug into a pouch attached to her belt and pulled out a few small vials. “Healing potions, and—this!” She held up a glimmering object—it was a charm, adorned with a tiny carved wolf. “This might enhance our luck or speed if we use it.”

“Or it could explode in our faces.” I arched an eyebrow but couldn’t stop my grin.

“Always the optimist,” she teased, and I felt warmth creep into my cheeks. She turned serious again, her eyes roving over the altar nearby. “We should keep moving. There could be more lurking about.”

As we began to traverse through the chamber, we finally arrived at the altar's edge. Despite the eerie atmosphere that clung to the air, there was something alluring about the carvings—symbols of power and domination.

“Do you think it’s safe to touch anything?” I asked cautiously, glancing back at her.

“Better than messing with things in complete ignorance,” she said. “But let’s not touch anything until we’ve scouted out more. I’m not eager to reactivate any dark magic.”

“You’re smarter than you look,” I smirked, but internally, I admired her wisdom. It reminded me why I had agreed to this partnership—even if trouble often found us, it seemed we made a competent team.

Suddenly, a low rumble pierced the air, and the ground shuddered beneath our feet. Dust cascaded from the walls, and I turned to Maya, alarm in my gaze. “What was that?”

Before she could respond, the stone floor shifted, revealing a hidden door just behind the altar, a faint blue aura pulsating from the cracks, hinting at something powerful within.

“Did we seriously just unlock a secret?” Maya’s eyes glimmered with excitement.

“Looks like it,” I said, stepping backward and holding my sword ready.

“On three. We’ll open it together,” Maya insisted, her fingers curling tight around my arm.

“Alright. One… Two… Three!”

We pushed the door with synchronized force, and it swung open to reveal not only a dimly lit passage but also an exhilarating sense of danger and promise.

“Brace yourself,” Maya said, her voice steady, though her eyes danced with adventure. “Let’s see what the next stage holds.”

With a shared nod, we stepped into the unknown, a thrill rushing through me. My pulse quickened as the darkness enveloped us, each step toward whatever lay ahead feeling like a leap into destiny.

As the words faded from my mind, like a lingering echo, I scarcely had time to process the information before a breathless voice echoed through the passage, chilling me to the bone.

“Welcome to the true depths of the dungeon… you’ll wish you never came here.”

A figure materialized before us, cloaked in shadows—an ominous silhouette moving like smoke. My heart thundered as I instinctively positioned myself in front of Maya, ready for whatever The Shadow Master would throw at us next.

We had come so far, and I wasn't about to let chaos claim our victory.

“Get ready, Maya. This is going to be a battle for our lives.”

The party screen showed a new member. One he hadn’t invited.
