The Basics of Survival
My heart raced as the last echoes of the monster's screech faded into the silence that had fallen over the clearing. The acrid scent of burnt fur lingered in the air, mixing with the earthy musk of disturbed soil, creating a heady cocktail that was almost dizzying. I could still feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins, a reminder of how close I had come to becoming the monster's meal.
"Are you okay?" Maya's voice cut through the haze, sharp and focused.
I looked over to find her crouched a few feet away, examining the remains of the Chimera—a grotesque beast that had lunged at me with ferocious speed. Its long, serpentine tail twitched sporadically, but my instincts told me it was dead. The creature’s scales reflected the dim light filtering through the trees, shimmering like oil on water.
"Yeah," I replied, brushing my hands against my trousers. They were damp with sweat and slightly sticky from the remnants of the beast. “I think I’m good.” My voice wavered slightly as I spoke, a stark reminder that facing danger had always been limited to the virtual screens I had grown up with.
"You fought well,” she said, standing up straight. I caught the barest hint of a smile tugging at her lips, and something warm blossomed in my chest. “But you have to learn to control your skills if you want to survive.”
"Right. Skills," I murmured, echoing the weight of her words. My mind raced, recalling the glowing user interface I had seen when I first awoke in this world. I could feel it nudging at the back of my consciousness—a link to a deeper understanding.
Taking a deep breath, I focused inward, searching for that mental icon, the one that seemed to embody my newfound abilities. Almost immediately, a series of translucent panels materialized, sprawling out like a constellation against the backdrop of my thoughts.

- Basic Swordsmanship: Level 1
- Endurance: Level 1
My fingers hovered over the glowing lines, tracing the words that pulsed with life. As if sensing my curiosity, they flickered, revealing more information.
Basic Swordsmanship: A foundational skill necessary for melee combat. Increases attack speed and accuracy.
“Okay, that sounds useful,” I mumbled. The urge to experiment surged within me. I unholstered the sword—a battered blade I had scavenged from the scene and felt its cool metal against my palm. It was surprisingly well-balanced, and I shifted my grip, feeling the way its weight shifted as I moved.
“Let me show you a few techniques,” Maya suggested, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. “You need to learn how to wield that thing properly before the next monster shows up.”
I nodded, excitement mingling with anxiety. She stepped back, gesturing for me to follow suit, and I mimicked her stance, feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent.
“First—a basic slash. Don’t just throw your arm. You have to plant your feet and let your whole body follow through.” She demonstrated, her movements fluid and precise. The blade sliced through the air with a whoosh, leaving behind an almost physical echo.
Sweat dripped down my forehead as I tried to follow her lead. I swung high, letting my body engage, but instead of the controlled arc she had executed, I overcompensated and ended up staggering off balance. My feet tangled, and I barely managed to avoid tripping.
Maya chuckled, the melodic sound easing some of my tension. “Not bad for a first try! But move with intention. You aren’t just swinging a sword; you’re engaging your enemy.”
"Right," I said through gritted teeth, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. But what did I expect? I’d had virtual jobs that required precision, but I had never taken a life—never had to fight for my own.
“Let’s try again,” she encouraged, an earnest tone in her voice. We spent the next several minutes practicing, my erratic swings starting to smooth out into controlled motions. Slowly, I began to feel the rhythm of the blade, merging it with my own spirit.
The air was thick with the mingled scents of forest foliage and the lingering odor from the Chimera's demise. With every swing, my heartbeat aligned with the pulse of the newfound skills unfolding within me. I immersed myself deeper into the flow, forgetting about the creature that had just hunted me.
“Good! That's better!” Maya exclaimed, her voice a bright light in the encroaching shadows of despair that started to nibble at my confidence.
With more practice, I found my footing—a satisfying rush of warmth surged through me as I executed a decent horizontal slash that connected with an imaginary foe.
“Feel that?” she said, a twinkle in her eyes. “You’re gaining confidence. Each skill you master will help you level up. And with that comes new abilities. You just earned yourself some experience points, my friend.”
"Experience points?” I echoed, a lump of curiosity forming in my throat. “How does that work?”
“You typically gain XP by defeating monsters, completing quests, or mastering skills,” she explained, pacing before me like a teacher. “But there are other ways too—some less ethical than others.” The hint of mischief in her tone caught my attention. “But let’s focus on the basics for now.”
Before I could respond, an unsettling chill crept through the air. It slithered across the back of my neck like a spider’s leg. Maya suddenly held up a hand, eyes narrowing as she scanned our surroundings.
“What’s wrong?” I whispered, instinctively dropping into a defensive stance.
“Something’s off. I can feel it.” She didn’t elaborate further, her entire demeanor shifting from playful to deadly serious. Every hair on my body stood on end as her gaze shifted to the treeline.
The moment stretched taut, an invisible string pulled so tight I could almost hear it creak. A growl echoed from the depths of the forest, deep and resonant.
Another monster?
Wind rustled through the branches, sending a cascade of leaves swirling in the air. I steadied my breath, gripping my sword tightly, its metal warm against my fingertips.
“Prepare yourself, Alex,” Maya whispered, her voice low and steady. She drew a pair of daggers from her belt; they glinted dully in the dim light.
The growl transformed suddenly, morphing into a sickening cackle that made the skin on my arms crawl. Shadows flickered from behind the trees, swirling and warping into a grotesque figure.
The Shadow Master.
I had only heard whisperings of him from desperate travelers. A foe who orchestrated chaos, controlling minions at his will. My blood turned to ice. This was more than I had bargained for, my hands trembling as the monstrosity emerged from the dark like a wraith clad in a nocturne.
Something passed between us—unspoken around me, stifling, leaving me gasping. And then the Shadows began to form—the very essence of darkness warped and writhed at his feet.
“Stay back!” Maya barked.
Then it lunged, a blur of shadow and sharp claws heading straight for me.
I had no time to think—only to react. My instincts took over; I swung my sword with everything in me, channeling the skills I had just begun to develop.
“C’mon! You can do it!” Maya shouted, diving into motion beside me. She twisted, her daggers flashing with deadly elegance as she struck at the creature’s flank.
My own attack connected, metal meeting shadow in a shower of sparks. The impact reverberated up my arm, filling me with exhilaration.
“Keep it distracted!” Maya called, her voice blending seamlessly with our whirlwind of movements.
I only partially understood her words; my entire focus honed in on the enemy. My heart thundered, each beat surging with newfound clarity. The world narrowed—simulated life and death became blurred as I fought for survival, my own purpose crystallizing amid the chaos.
I could feel my skills leveling up in real-time, gaining momentum like the crescendo of a symphony building towards some chaotic climax.
My sword struck again, catching a flicker of the creature’s form. Another growl echoed, deeper and more furious. I could sense its rage through the air, palpable and electric.
Just as it seemed to come to terms with our presence, I drew a deep breath and made the decision that would define this moment. Instead of waiting for it to strike, I forced my body into action. I sprang into the air, swinging the blade downwards in a powerful arc.
I connected—metal sank into darkness. And yet, it felt euphoric. I had faced the monster!
As the triumphant feeling surged through me, the world shifted around us.

The world went quiet, almost peaceful for a fraction of a second.
But then the Shadow Master snarled, a low and rumbling sound filled with menace, as his form dissolved into the winds of the clearing. My heart dropped as realization kicked in. It wasn’t over.
Turning to face the approaching darkness, I gritted my teeth and tightened my grip on the sword, ready to fight again.
I had survived my first battle—but now, a bigger storm was coming.
And I had a feeling it was just the beginning.
