Dungeon Breaker: Rise of the Forgotten Ch 44/50

Betrayal Forgiven: Jasmine's Choice

The air crackled with raw energy, thick with the acrid scent of brimstone and burnt metal. I stood at the precipice of chaos, my heart drumming a panicked rhythm against my ribs. Around me, shadows writhed like hungry serpents, and I could feel the oppressive weight of Lord Malakar’s presence even before I set eyes on him.

“Jasmine,” I called, my voice low but urgent. “We need to regroup! We can’t—”

“You think I’d let you leave just like that?” Malakar’s voice sliced through the tension, smooth and mocking. The shadows parted, revealing him standing there, center-stage in this macabre theater.

Jasmine was ahead of me, her back straight and defiant, but the uncertainty in her stance was unmistakable. The flicker of betrayal hung in Silence stretched between us, and I couldn’t deny how deeply it stung. I filled my lungs with determination, willing my instincts to override the fear that gnawed at me.

“Don’t listen to him, Jasmine!” I pressed, urgency flooding my tone. “He’s trying to manipulate you!”

“Oh, Alex.” Malakar chuckled, a sound that sent chills racing down my spine. “You’re charmingly naive. Jasmine here has always been drawn to the power I wield. Why else would she have joined your little band?”

The shadows danced at his command, teasing the edge of Jasmine’s resolve like tendrils of smoke curling into the night sky. My hands clenched into fists as I fought against the panic rising within me.

Jasmine turned slightly, her expression twisted in conflict. I caught a glimpse of her azure eyes, filled with the storm of her inner turmoil, and my heart sank. “Alex...”

“Don’t!” I interrupted, scanning the ominous room around us. “I’ve seen what he does to people! You’re not like them. You’re better than that!”

She hesitated, and in that moment, I stepped forward. “You can choose to defy Malakar. You can be more than his pawn. We’ve fought so hard! Every single one of us—together. No matter how dark it gets, we can face it as a team!”

Malakar’s laughter reverberated off the stone walls, echoing like the death knell of a thousand dreams. “Sweet, naive Alex. She craves power. It’s written in her very blood.”

“No!” I shouted. “You don’t know her!”

The shadows shifted closer, pressing against us as Malakar extended a hand toward Jasmine. “Join me, and you’ll know strength beyond your wildest imagination.”

“I…” Her voice was barely a whisper, but its weight was crushing. “I want to be strong, but...”

“No!” I stepped in front of her, desperation shaping every word. “Strength doesn’t come from this kind of power. It’s forged through choice, loyalty, and sacrifice. You chose to stand with me once; you can do it again. Fight for your freedom!”

Jasmine’s gaze flitted from Malakar to me, an internal battle playing out before my eyes. The tension could have been sliced with a dagger. “I—”

“Time’s up!” Malakar snarled, his calm facade shattering. The shadows around him began to pulse, growing denser, thrumming with ominous energy. “Choose, Jasmine! Your pathetic hope is nothing against my power!”

“Fight!” I rallied, my voice rising above the tempest of darkness. “Fight for yourself! Fight for us!”

All at once, I felt it—a pulse in the air, a current of energy that thrummed at the edges of my consciousness. Jasmine’s eyes shone with fierce resolve, the light battling back the shadows.

“I choose…” she began, breath hitching in her throat. “I choose to stand by Alex!”

The moment hung, suspended in time like the silence before a storm. Malakar’s expression twisted in rage as the shadows recoiled, exposing the brightness of her decision.

“Foolish girl! You’ll regret this!” he bellowed, a flash of dark energy stretching outward like a claw preparing to strike.

With a surge of adrenaline, I grabbed Jasmine’s wrist, pulling her close. “Stick with me! We have to move!”

But before we could react, the shadows folded into a vortex, swirling violently as a fierce wind tore through the chamber. A sinister voice echoed, carrying with it the weight of a thousand trapped souls. “You think you can escape this, girl? You will pay for your betrayal!”

The ground shattered beneath my feet—a tempest of shadows surged higher, warping reality itself. I stumbled back, instinctively pushing Jasmine behind me, as the darkness began to solidify into grotesque shapes, twisted and writhing like the nightmares that haunted my nights.

“Oh no...” I gasped, my heart dropping as I recognized the forms of Malakar’s minions taking shape. They were fused with the shadows, full of rage and intent to punish. “Get ready!”

“Right!” Jasmine’s voice snapped back to determination, her daggers gleaming as she advanced alongside me. “We take them down together!”

The creatures lunged, their claws poised to shred. I dodged to the side, feeling a rush of air as one missed me by inches. My mind raced with strategies; I could sense their patterns, their weaknesses. This was no time to hesitate.

“Watch out!” she shouted, and I pivoted just in time to duck beneath a wildly thrust claw that sliced through the air above me. I could feel the rush of wind against my skin. Adrenaline sharpened my reflexes.

“Now!” I yelled, thrusting a hand out to summon my Fire Bolt spell. The heat ignited between my fingertips, sparked by the fury of every lost friend, every moment of doubt I had fought against. I conjured it into a blazing orb and hurled it toward the nearest creature. The bolt connected with a sickening hiss, exploding with fire and light.

Jasmine joined the fray with a flurry of movement, her footwork impeccable, every stab precise. “Keep them staggered!” she shouted through gritted teeth. “They’re weaker when they’re separated!”

“That’s the plan!” I replied, launching another spell, this time calling forth a gust of wind that knocked two of the shadow-beasts off-balance. They hissed, shrieking as they crashed into one another.

The clash intensified, our surroundings a whirlwind of chaos. I could feel the heat of the flames mixing with the chill of the shadows; the air was electric, charged with the fierce fight for our lives. Together, we danced through the chaos, a rhythm formed not just of instinct but of trust and determination.

We worked in tandem, our movements synchronized as if they were a part of a grand tapestry woven by fate. Each strike and each defensive maneuver was a promise that we would not falter; we would not fall.

But even as we battled, I could sense Malakar’s fury mounting. The energy coiling around him thickened, darkening the air as if it were a living entity just waiting to strike. “You think you can best me?” he growled, and the very shadows began to ripple and pulse around him.

“I won’t let you take anyone else!” Jasmine spat, determination lighting her eyes.

“Then you shall perish alongside him!” Malakar roared, and the tendrils of shadows began to expand, reaching for us like eager hands grasping for our throats.

In that moment, I knew we had to act fast. “Jasmine, together!” I shouted, channeling every ounce of energy I had left. Shadows were swallowed by the flames erupting from my palms as I unleashed my most potent attack, combining it with Jasmine’s swift strikes to amplify its power.

Light and darkness collided, the explosion illuminating the chamber in a blinding flash. I felt the heat wash over me, a wave crashing against the tangible dark. It rang through the air like a bell and surged forward, engulfing Malakar too.

He screamed, the sound echoing ominously as shadows twisted around him, trying to shield his form. Jasmine and I pushed forward, no longer just reacting but attacking, striking the darkness directly where it hurt most.

Suddenly, a blast of cold surged through the air, and I felt a stabbing pain slice across my back as a claw grazed my skin. I staggered, but Jasmine was there, pressing her shoulder against mine, giving me the strength to stand.

“Focus!” she shouted fiercely, pushing me back into the fight as we kept pushing, breaking through the ranks of his minions, advancing towards Malakar.

But, as we got closer, shadows twisted in defiance, forming a solid wall against us. “You’ll not pass!” Malakar spat, his eyes narrowing with rage. “Your foolishness will seal your fate!”

But Jasmine wouldn’t allow his malediction to shroud her. Meeting my gaze, she nodded. “Let’s end this. For everyone.”

Together, we tapped into every fragment of power we had forged throughout our journey—every victory, every loss, every lesson learned. In that moment, I felt ready to unleash everything, to bestow upon the shadows a reckoning they could scarcely fathom.

We struck in unison: Jasmine’s blades glinting as they danced through the air, my Fire Bolt erupting into flames, igniting the darkness. The impact sent shockwaves through the realm, resonating with the very core of our determination.

And then, in that cataclysmic convergence of light and dark, I felt something in me shift—a profound surge of strength, of experience. It ignited within me a new skill, burning brightly only moments before I felt a jarring wave crash over me. “Wait, what—?”

But there was no time to contemplate the insights that unraveled before me. Malakar’s furious roar shook the castle as the shadows began to tremble, buckling before our combined resolve.

I glanced at Jasmine, adrenaline thrumming through my veins, and shouted, “Now! Finish him!”

We surged forward, fury and hope colliding, intent on striking down the darkness lingering at the edge of our world. And as I lunged, I felt a peculiar tingle spread across my body—was I leveling up? Clarity flooded my mind, energy surging like wildfire as I connected with her once more, cutting deeper against Malakar’s flailing defenses.

But just as we rushed toward our final stand, an ominous shadow swept in from behind, a dark foreboding that filled the room with dread. I turned, instincts screaming just as the malevolent force exploded forth like a beast unleashed.

“Your betrayal will be your doom!” Malakar shrieked, and as I locked eyes with the dark being stepping forth from the shadows, I braced myself.

A new boss?

Suddenly, I encountered a darkness deeper than any pit I had ever known.

This was only the beginning.

The party screen showed a new member. One he hadn’t invited.
