Dungeon Breaker: Rise of the Forgotten Ch 26/50

Divided Loyalties: A Dangerous Game

The air hung thick with tension as I stepped deeper into the shadows of the ruined temple, its ancient stones creaking against the weight of unspoken secrets. Jasmine walked beside me, her silhouette a stark contrast against the flickering torchlight. The soft sound of her footfalls—like whispers in a still night—reminded me of the fragile truce we’d established. Trust was a currency more scarce than the gold in Malakar’s coffers, and after everything that had transpired, I wasn’t sure if I would ever spend it freely again.

"Keep your head on a swivel, Alex," Jasmine said, her voice low and sharp, cutting through the oppressive silence. "We’re not going to just find answers sitting back at camp."

“I know that,” I replied, irritation creeping into my voice. “But if we get caught, it won’t just be us in trouble. We can’t afford to drag the others into this mess.” The reminder loomed over us, a specter of my growing responsibility.

She shot me an eyebrow, fit to challenge the moon’s brightness. “You think I don’t know how to handle myself? I’ve survived worse than Malakar’s minions. Besides, you’re not exactly a slouch either. You’ve taken down how many dungeon bosses already?”

“Yeah, but this feels different,” I mumbled. “We’re in his territory now. It’s no longer just a game.”

Her expression softened, just for a heartbeat, enough that I noticed the flash of understanding woven in with her infamous bravado. “Then let’s play it smart. Remember why we’re here. We need intel, not glory.”

“Right,” I nodded, forcing the doubts into a corner of my mind.

We continued through crumbling archways, the scent of damp stone and distant decay gnawing at my senses. I felt acutely aware of the darkness pressing in around us. The laughter of the dungeon monsters now seemed like echoes from a world long forgotten, haunting me as I fought to remain grounded in the moment.

The central chamber loomed ahead, its massive stone door ajar. I could make out carvings that told a story of malice and betrayal. This was it—the heart of Malakar’s operations. I could feel my heart thumping in time with the pulse of uncertainty echoing around us.

“Keep low,” Jasmine instructed, kneeling to the ground as we approached the opening. I followed her lead, sensing the thrill of our pursuit coursing through me. The adrenaline outstripped my earlier fears, sharpening my senses to every draft and unsettling sound.

Peering cautiously into the chamber, I saw what lay beyond: bizarre glyphs glowed along the walls, littered with the remnants of broken artifacts. At the center, a massive table covered in scrolls seemed to be the focal point of the room. Various maps and strategies were sprawled out like a dragon’s hoard. Malakar was clearly plotting something grand.

“There,” I pointed, gripping the hilt of my dagger. “We can gather information from those maps.”

“Too easy,” Jasmine said, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the area. “The moment we set foot into that zone, we’re exposed.”

“Then we do this smart,” I breathed, gathering my courage. “I’ll create a distraction. You grab whatever you can.”

She cocked her head, a hint of amusement in her eyes. “You think I’m a mere thief? I could do this ten times faster than you.”

But I could see her internal debate about the risk we were both undertaking. “This isn’t about showing off,” I insisted, the urgency in me building with every moment we wasted. “This is about survival. We don’t know what traps he’s set.”

“Fine,” she acquiesced, though I could tell my suggestion still grated on her pride. “What’s your plan?”

With a deep breath, I scanned our surroundings, and inspiration struck. “I’ll use my explosions. They’ll get the guards riled and distracted, allowing you time to get in and out as quick as possible.”

“You think you can just—”

“I’m trying to think three moves ahead, Jasmine. You’re a rogue. Use your skills to scout in and out silently.” I took a moment, feeling the weight of our whispered conspiracy. “If we don’t act now, we lose our chance.”

“Alright, but don’t you dare chicken out on me,” she said, a glimmer of excitement flickering through her demeanor.

I grinned, despite the heaviness in my chest. “Never.”

We moved to our positions. I settled behind a crumbling pillar, feeling the rough stone against my back. I channeled my energy, countdown in my mind, as I prepared to unleash an explosive Decoy Shard.

“Three… two… one!” I whispered, flinging the shard toward a distant section of the room, where shadows danced between broken columns.

The moment the shard collided with the ground, chaos erupted. A brilliant blast shook the air, sending debris flying. The sound reverberated like a thunderclap, causing guards to shout in alarm, scrambling to address the threat.

“Go!” I shouted, urgency propelling me as I dashed toward the entrance, eyes glued to Jasmine. She darted past the confusion with the grace of a shadow in the night.

I held my breath, tracking her movement, praying she’d be quick. My own heart raced, every sound amplified as I watched her blend into the chaos like smoke. The guards stormed past me, their shouts echoing in my ears, but it was the flash of her cloak that pulled me from my stupor. She had reached the table.

In a heartbeat, she skimmed her fingers across the scrolls, snatching several before disappearing into the depths of the chamber. My own room-long standoff transformed into a battle with the fast-approaching guards, their footsteps thudding menacingly against the stone floor.

“They’re coming!” I shouted, adrenaline coursing through me. I pulled my dagger, ready to fight if it came to that.

But, as the guards moved to seal off the exit, I felt a surge of confidence. I wasn't just a pawn in a game anymore. I had a distinct role.

The first guard appeared, with the glint of malice evident even in his frantic eyes. I dodged his frantic swing, countering with a quick slash across his chest. Shadows of doubt slipped away, replaced by the clarity of purpose.

Then another appeared, and then another. I needed to buy Jasmine time. I weaved my way through their attacks, striking with calculated precision. Each clash of our weapons reverberated through the air, the scent of sweat and iron mixing dangerously with the scent of burnt debris.

Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Jasmine slipping between shadows like smoke. She had her hands full with gathering scrolls, and I couldn’t help but admire her speed.

But the guards were relentless, a jolt of aggression crashing down on me. I ducked and weaved, deflecting their strikes while focusing on a path to guard the exit, almost like a player dodging enemy fire in a game. With each moment, fury and strategy collided, while somewhere around me, I could feel the battlefield evolving.

“Alex, now!” Jasmine’s voice pierced the clamor.

I snapped my focus back just in time to see her leverage her speed and agility, launching herself towards me, scrolls in hand. Without hesitating, I dove to intercept her with outstretched arms.

It seemed to happen in slow motion; the guards were closing in, but just as I felt the weight of defeat encroach on me, Jasmine slipped into my grasp. I could smell her urgency, tinged with the remaining traces of burnt wax and adrenaline.

We pivoted in one motion, retreating toward the exit. No time for hesitation, my heart thundered against my chest, mirroring the rush of battle that engulfed the temple behind us.

A large figure emerged from the shadows, taller and more menacing than the guards—a hulking armored knight with malevolent intent etched into every inch of his being.

It was one of Malakar’s elite guards.

“Run!” I shouted, adrenaline fueling my legs as I tugged Jasmine toward an exit. At that moment, the sense of unity sparked like dry tinder into flames; we were a team. We dashed past the knight, adrenaline surging as our connection deepened, and I couldn’t help but channel the newfound power coursing through me in that moment of extraordinary danger.

The knight lunged. I dodged left, feeling a rush of air as his sword narrowly missed me, combining urgency with an electrifying thrill.

We burst into the hallway, the oppressive stone of the chamber now replaced by an echoing corridor. “We need to split!” Jasmine shouted, urgency pouring from her every syllable.

“No way,” I yelled back. “Too risky.” My instincts screamed that putting distance between us would only bring isolation.

Suddenly, Malakar’s furious voice echoed down the corridor. “Stop them!”

Instinctively, Jasmine and I pushed forward faster, outrunning the threat and toward the exit. Just as I glanced over my shoulder, the knight charged, a tidal wave of fury that sent a rush of fear down my spine.

We burst through a door—freedom stinging us like a slap in the face—taking a moment to catch our breaths outside.

Sweat trickled down my neck, my fingers went cold, but the taste of victory was palpable. “We made it,” Jasmine breathed, disbelief mingling with relief.

“Yeah, but not without drawing attention,” I replied, feeling the weight of the enemy’s forces preparing to hunt us.

“Then we need to regroup fast,” she said, determination shining through her mud-streaked determination.

As I glanced down at the scrolls in her hands, a rush of exhilaration surged through me. We turned our attention to our spoils—a wealth of information that might finally turn the tide against Lord Malakar.

As I rifled through its contents, something shifted in my vision, a screen that appeared out of nowhere, wrapped in sparkles, flashing before my eyes.

“You’ve completed a dangerous operation. Experience gained!” the system blurted. My heart raced.

[Level Up: Alex Carter has reached Level 21!]

Beneath that, a notification pinged, unfolding a list of new skills I could acquire:

  • Tactical Retreat: Gain a temporary boost in speed while escaping.
  • Shadow Manipulation: Harness ambient shadows to increase stealth ability.
  • Dungeon Master’s Insight: Briefly discern traps and enemy weaknesses.

Choices flooded my mind as adrenaline surged, but one option stood out amidst the chaos.

“What is it?” Jasmine snapped, shaking me from my momentary distraction.

“It’s a skill from leveling up! Tactical Retreat! We need to get our teamwork tighter if we want to take Malakar down.”

“Alright! Focus!" The determination in her voice sparked in me like embers reignited. “Let’s figure out what we’ve got.”

But even as we schemed under the fading light of the temple, the weight of Malakar's impending threat loomed like a gathering storm. And deep down, I could feel his heavy hand increasing the tempo of our deadly game.

With newfound resolve, I whispered, “We need to get back to the others and prepare for what’s coming.”

But Malakar wasn't finished with us yet.

A shiver ran down my spine—a whisper of danger trailing behind—and the sudden explosion of sound shattered the uneasy calm.

“Here they come!”

We sprinted into the darkness of the forest, every part of me surging with excitement and trepidation as the hunt began anew.

The dungeon door sealed behind them. There was no going back now.
