Dungeon Breaker: Rise of the Forgotten Ch 22/50

Into the Depths: Advanced Dungeon Training

The stench of damp stone and decay filled the air as I descended into the depths of the advanced dungeon. Each step echoed ominously against the walls, a reminder of the trials that awaited me. I gripped my sword tightly, my heartbeat drumming in sync with the muted thud of my footsteps. The air was thick with anticipation, sending tendrils of unease creeping down my spine.

Jasmine walked beside me, her daggers glinting in the dim light. Her sharp eyes scanned our surroundings, the gleam of her determination cutting through the gloom. “Ready for this?” she asked, her voice a blend of teasing and challenge, like the quick flicker of her blades.

I shrugged, trying to mask my anxiety. “As ready as I’ll ever be. But if we’re to stand a chance against Lord Malakar’s forces, we need the experience. Plus, if we don’t face tougher foes, how are we supposed to level up?”

She smirked. “Glad to see the strategist finally embracing danger. Let’s hope it doesn’t get us killed.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence,” I replied dryly, though a smile tugged at my lips.

The dungeon's halls opened up into a vast chamber, illuminated by flickering torches that cast demonic shadows on the walls. In the center stood a stone pedestal, its surface covered in inscriptions that pulsed with an eerie light. I stepped closer, my curiosity piqued.

“Some kind of altar?” I mused, tracing a hand across the script. The symbols felt warm beneath my fingertips, radiating energy as if they were alive. “Maybe it’s linked to the monsters here.”

“Or perhaps it’s a trap,” Jasmine cautioned, though her gaze lingered on the pedestal, enthralled. “Let’s not linger too long; the deeper we go, the worse it gets. Remember the last expedition?”

I winced at the memory of our last dungeon crawl—the crushing defeat and the cold, creeping sense of failure as we faced foes far beyond our skill. “Trust me, I’m not planning on repeating that.”

Just then, a low growl reverberated through the chamber. From the shadows emerged a hulking beast, a gnarled wolf with scales instead of fur. Its eyes glowed like molten gold as it snapped its jaws, revealing jagged teeth that dripped with venom.

“Of course,” I muttered, something clenched in my chest. “Looks like we’re about to find out how ready we really are.”

Jasmine sprang into action, her movements fluid and precise as she drew her daggers. “On my mark, follow my lead!”

I nodded, adopting my stance as the wolf lunged. It barreled through the air, and in that split second, I had to decide—attack of defense? I filed away my doubts and leaped forward, feeling the rush of adrenaline spike through me.

“NOW!” Jasmine yelled, and I swung my sword with all my might, timing my strike to land as the beast landed less than a foot away from me.

The blade clashed against the beast’s side, causing it to stagger slightly, letting out a guttural growl filled with rage. Jasmine was already at work, darting between its legs, targeting its underbelly with calculated precision. I repositioned myself, readying for another strike as the wolf spun around.

The fight was chaotic. Each attack demanded quick thinking and flawless execution. As our blows landed, I focused on the animated life bar hovering above the beast's head—it drained slowly, but the strain on my body was palpable. I could feel sweat trickling down my back, mixing with the cold air surrounding us.

“Keep it distracted!” Jasmine called out, flipping over the creature while landing a blow on its flanks, barely avoiding its snapping jaws. “I’ll go for the legs!”

I gritted my teeth and charged again, swinging low this time in hopes of knocking the creature off balance. The impact stung my arms, but the wolf let out a pained howl, wavering on its feet.

Suddenly, an idea struck me—a gamble, but one that could pay off. “I have an idea! If I can trigger that altar’s magic, we might get a boost!”

“Are you insane?” Jasmine shouted, dodging another massive paw swipe. “You can’t just mess with unknown magic!”

“But it might be our only chance!” I countered, weighing the risks in my mind. “If we can harness it, we could turn the tide!”

The beast lunged again, and I ducked, but not before slashing its flank one last time. The gaping wound oozed dark ichor, and the wolf reared back with a throaty growl that threatened to split my eardrums.

“No time! I’m doing it!” I dashed toward the pedestal, the growling beast looming behind me. My heart raced, my instincts screaming for me to run, but desperation propelled me forward. I slammed my hand on the warm surface of the altar, the runes glowing brighter as I focused my energy into it.

Immediately, a low hum resonated through the air, and a pang of energy rippled outward. I felt power surge through me, igniting every nerve in my body. The markings glowed like molten fire, and the altar began to pull the essence from the wolf, siphoning its strength.

Jasmine’s froze as she darted back and forth, narrowly evading the beast's furious attempts to reach me. “Whatever you’re doing, hurry! I can’t keep this up forever!”

“Almost there!” I grunted, pouring every bit of focus into the altar, willing it to amplify my attack. The wolf let out a shriek as the energy coursed through the chamber, and I felt the air shift, crackling with power.

In one fateful moment, the altar erupted in a dazzling burst of light. I instinctively raised my arms, shielding my eyes from the blinding glow. The wolf was pulled into the light, its essence breaking apart and feeding back into me.

The energy invigorated me, my level bar glowing dangerously close to a new threshold. With a roar of newfound strength, I charged back at the wolf, my sword blazing with an ethereal light. The beast stumbled, and without hesitation, I swung once more, unleashing the power granted by the altar.

The blade cleaved through the darkness, connecting with the creature's heart. A blinding flash erupted as the wolf disintegrated into a swirl of shimmering particles, leaving behind a handful of shimmering crystals.

“We did it!” I shouted, feeling the weight of exhaustion lift off my shoulders. But even as victory washed over me, a flicker of doubt stirred within. Had the altar truly aided me, or had I merely acted recklessly?

Jasmine rushed to my side, breathless but triumphant. “Nice work, but we can’t linger. Other creatures might come looking for dinner.”

I nodded, but my triumph was short-lived. I glanced at the crystals left on the ground—these were not mere treasures. They were palpable proof of what we could accomplish together. As I bent to collect them, a shadow emerged from the corner of my vision.

“Alex?” Jasmine’s tone shifted, turning wary.

Before I could straighten, I felt a cold blade against my throat, a sharp gasp escaping Jasmine. “What’s going on?”

“Sorry, Alex,” a familiar voice crooned from the shadows, dripping with malice. “But it’s time to dismantle the progress you’ve made.”

My heart dropped as I recognized the voice. “Derek?” He was the traitor we'd run into before, the one who thrived in shadow and manipulation.

“That’s right.” His eyes glinted with a malevolent glee, a wicked smile framing his face as he pushed the blade ever so slightly against my skin. “You should know, I’ve been waiting for this moment.”

Violet sparks flashed in the corner of my vision as adrenaline coursed through my veins. “Let her go!” I yelled, clenching my jaw, my instincts screaming to act.

“Oh, but I can’t,” Derek taunted, a cruel smile stretching across his face. “She’s the bait, Alex. With her, you’ll follow—you always do.”

My heart raced, muscles tense as uncertainty clawed at my resolve. This was it—the moment that would determine whether we could emerge stronger or fall further into darkness.

“You made a mistake coming after me,” I said, forcing my voice to be steady, defiance flooding my words. “I’m not the same Alex anymore.” I felt the energy grounded in my form; it throbbed with potential.

“Then let’s see what you’ve got,” he sneered, releasing Jasmine just enough to make her stumble backward, his eyes glinting with malicious intent.

In that moment, the gears locked into place in my mind. I had come too far to falter; he wouldn’t just have me at his mercy.

I squared my shoulders, adrenaline sparking through my body. “You’ll regret this.”

As if on cue, a surge of power ignited within, and I felt myself leveling up—gaining a new skill, a change in the air around me. But then I realized, the true test awaited me.

The moment hung in the air, pregnant with tension, and I braced myself for the battle that was about to unfold.

After all, there was no escaping the dungeon now; I would face Derek head-on, or risk losing everything.
