Dungeon Breaker: Rise of the Forgotten Ch 2/50

First Steps into Darkness: Exploring the Dungeon

The air was thick with dampness and an earthy musk that clung to the stones around me. As I stepped deeper into the dungeon, every footfall echoed with uncertainty. The faint glow of glowing fungi cast eerie shadows, stretching and waving as if they had their own intentions. I gripped the hilt of my starting weapon—a crude iron dagger—my anxiety bubbling just beneath my determined façade.

My heart raced with equal parts fear and excitement. I hadn't pondered just how surreal this transformation would be; the real world had melded into something straight out of a fantasy game. A UI floated in my peripheral view, reminding me of my current stats. Level One. Yeah, it was going to take more than rookie enthusiasm to survive this place.

“Stay sharp, Alex,” I muttered under my breath.

Suddenly, I heard a rustling ahead. My pulse quickened as a shadow flitted across the dimly lit passage. Slowly, I advanced, the thrill of the unknown coiling around me. Just as I peered around a bend, I glimpsed the source of the noise: a small, grotesque creature with beady eyes and jagged teeth emerged, barely reaching my knee. A Goblin.

“Great,” I whispered, eyeing the creature as it brandished a tiny club. “Just what I needed.”

“I’d recommend the left flank,” came a voice from behind me, sharp yet playful. It was Jasmine, her signature smirk lighting up her features even in the darkness of the dungeon. “You know, if you plan on living past this encounter.”

I shot her a glare, my breath catching slightly at how effortless she moved. “What, did you take an advanced class in combat strategy while I was busy embracing my fear of small green things?”

She rolled her eyes but circled to my left, her graceful agility obvious. “It’s called instinct, Alex. I have it in spades. Now, are you going to attack or just admire the scenery?”

I swallowed hard, adrenaline coursing through me as I tried to channel my uncertainties into action. “Fine.” I took a steadying breath and dashed forward. The goblin’s eyes flew open in surprise, and I lunged, dagger aimed straight for its thin neck.

The moment my blade connected, I felt a jolt of exhilaration. The creature let out a screech, and I quickly pulled back, heart pounding. A notification chimed softly in my mind.

“See? Not so hard, is it?” Jasmine laughed, darting closer to finish the goblin with a swift strike from her own weapon. With a flourish, she dispatched the creature, and it crumpled to the ground, a dismal heap.

“Easy for you to say, you’ve done this before,” I mumbled, surveying the lifeless form. “I’m still wondering if I should reconsider my life choices.”

“Yeah, you’ll get used to it. Think of dungeons like puzzles. Each monster is just another piece.” She winked and bent down to inspect the goblin’s loot. “This one has a few coins. Not much, but better than nothing.”

As I knelt beside her, I couldn’t help but admire her confidence, mixed with a fierce independence that set her apart from any girl I’d ever known. “You make it sound easy. I’m still trying to figure out how to breathe and stab at the same time.”

Jasmine shot me a bemused look, her emerald eyes glinting with mischief. “You could try looking at the system. It’s got all the tips you’d need. No shame in it, you know.”

I scrunched my nose, the idea grating on my pride. “Fine, but I’m not going to blame a game for my mistakes.”

She chuckled, shaking her head. “You’re stubborn, you know that?”

“Yeah, well…” I trailed off, contemplating our situation as we moved deeper into the tunnel. The atmosphere shifted; tension tightened in the air.

We came upon the entrance to a larger chamber, the sounds of scuttling growing louder. Jasmine slowed beside me, her expression serious now.

“Something feels off,” she said, scanning the room. The ground was littered with bones and detritus, remnants of past adventurers, no doubt. A faint smell of decay wafted through the air, and I grimaced.

“Maybe we should turn around?” I suggested, feeling an innate instinct of survival kick in.

“Where’s your adventurous spirit?” she challenged, grinning in defiance.

With a sigh, I forced myself forward. “Right behind yours, apparently.”

As we crossed the threshold, the scuttling revealed itself—a small horde of Goblins, their eyes glinting with malice. They were slightly larger than the last one we faced, each armed with sharpened sticks and crude weapons.

“Uh… I think we may have bitten off more than we can chew,” I murmured, taking a step back. I went very still, and the dungeon's fetid air felt heavier.

“Get ready, we’re fighting!” Jasmine shouted, unsheathing her blade.

I scrambled to recall my training, my mind racing. The nervousness was drowned out by the rush of adrenaline. I focused on the goblins, trying to assess their movements like pieces on a board.

Twisting my dagger, I prepared to act as Jasmine darted in to engage the nearest Goblin, deftly sidestepping its wild swing. I followed closely, my muscles tingling with both fear and eager anticipation.

The first goblin lunged at me, and everything slowed down. My veins thrummed. I sidestepped it, swinging my dagger in a wide arc, catching it along the side. Another notification blinked before me.

“Good! Keep going!” Jasmine’s voice cut through the tension as she danced between attackers, her blade a whirling blur.

I charged forward, the knife glinting in the dim light as I thrust it into another goblin, feeling the rush of victory swell within me.

“Hey, we make a pretty good team!” I shouted through the din of combat, exhilarated by our success. The adrenaline thrummed through my body as I engaged another creature.

“Not bad for a newbie!” Jasmine teased, landing a brutal slash on a goblin.

Just as I was starting to feel the thrill of the battle surge through me, a shriek echoed through the chamber, different from our foes. It was deeper, more guttural, resonating through the very stones beneath my feet. the world seemed to slow down.

“What was that?” I gasped, glancing back at Jasmine, who raised an eyebrow at me.

“Something big. And I don’t think it’s friendly.”

On cue, a hulking shape emerged from the shadows—a massive Goblin War Chief, clad in battered armor and wearing a belt of skulls. It stomped forward, the ground trembling beneath its weight. The lesser goblins scattered, but not before throwing a last desperate look at us.

“Uh, so… what’s the plan?” I stammered, clutching my dagger tightly.

Jasmine’s expression turned serious, and she looked me dead in the eye. “Get behind me. This is a boss encounter.”

“Boss?” I echoed, stepping back instinctively even as my curiosity piqued. “Great, just what I needed to face off against. What do we do?”

“We hit hard, and we hit fast. You ready?”

“Ready as I’ll ever be!” I cried out, though I knew I was more like a target than a combatant at this moment.

Before we could even strategize, the Chief charged, its massive club swinging toward us. Instinct kicked in, and we both dashed to the side, narrowly avoiding the crushing blow as it slammed into the stone floor, sending debris flying.

I barely had time to stand firm when Jasmine sprinted toward the chief, leaping onto its back and driving her dagger into the meat of its shoulder. The creature roared, swiping wildly, and I spotted my opening.

“Now or never!” I shouted, racing forward and plunging my dagger into its side.

The goblin howled, shifting to throw Jasmine off. She flipped backward, narrowly avoiding its retaliatory strike and landing gracefully a few feet away. My heart raced with exhilaration. This was what I craved: strategy entwined with heart-pounding action.

But the War Chief was furious now. It turned and charged at me, eyes filled with rage. I barely had time to react. Panic surged as I sidestepped, stumbling backward, but the ground beneath me suddenly shifted, and my foot slipped.

The sound of cracking stone filled my ears, and before I knew it, I was tumbling into an unseen pit.

Adrenaline surged through my veins as I desperately clawed for a ledge, landing painfully on my side. The world above shifted into shadows, but just before everything went dark, I felt the weight of a sudden surge of power.

My heart raced with this new revelation, but it faded into the chaos of the chamber above as Jasmine’s cries echoed in horror.

“Alex!”

And then darkness enveloped me.
