Dungeon Breaker: Rise of the Forgotten Ch 17/50

A Glimpse of the Future: Prophecy Unfolds

The smell of damp earth and charred wood filled the air as we gathered around the ancient altar in the dimly lit chamber. Flickering torches cast warped shadows on the cracked stone walls, where remnants of an old prophecy had once been etched. I could feel the tension humming in the room, every member of my team acutely aware of the weight of what was about to unfold.

"Are you sure this is going to work, Alex?" Jasmine stood an arm's length from me, her arms crossed, eyebrows arched in that familiar skeptical fashion that sent a shiver down my spine, reminding me just how fiercely she challenged everything I suggested.

"According to the lore, the altar is a conduit. We just need to engage with it, focus our minds, and listen," I replied, forcing a confident edge into my tone. Internally, I was battling my own doubts, wondering what kind of terrible vision awaited us.

"I'd prefer a more hands-on approach," Kai added, his gravelly voice a stark contrast to Jasmine's quickness. The muscular tank was ready for action, fists clenched at his sides.

"We can’t just slam our fists into the altar, Kai. We need to understand what we're dealing with," I shot back, but part of me admired his enthusiasm, the desire to face whatever challenges lay ahead rather than parsing through potentially disastrous intel.

Jasmine leaned closer, her breath warm against my arm as she whispered, “Just remember, whatever we see might change everything. We need to be prepared.”

I nodded, my throat tight as I took my place in front of the worn stone altar. The language inscribed on its surface shimmered momentarily, a flickering reaction to our presence. It took me a moment to realize that it wasn’t on my account. It was the anticipation radiating off the others, a silent agreement that we were ready—at least outwardly— to know what destiny had in store.

I dropped my hands onto the cool stone, feeling the jagged edges press into my palms. “Let’s do this.”

We closed our eyes, and I felt the familiar tug of the system pulling me deeper. As my mind began to shift, a flood of energy engulfed us, a kaleidoscope of colors spinning in rhythm with a heartbeat that felt both alien and familiar. Suddenly, images flashed before me—chaos, flames, and bodies. Players clashed against grotesque corrupted beings, their faces distorted with fear or rage, weapons splintering and magic crackling through the air.

“Alex!” Jasmine’s voice broke through the haze, her panic echoing in my mind as I fought to regain control. “What do you see?”

“A war,” I choked out. “It’s a future I don’t want to envisage. There—look!” The vision sharpened, revealing a battlefield stained with the essence of despair. Players wielding their varying powers against dark, shadowy figures twisting into grotesque forms—the corrupted creatures were terrifying, and I could almost feel their malevolence licking at my skin.

“I see you out there,” Jasmine said, her voice steadying me, but inside, I felt the bite of fear. “What are we supposed to do?”

There was pressing urgency pulsing through me as the images morphed. I saw allies—good people, those who had fought alongside us—falling to their knees, surrounded by malevolent energies. I gritted my teeth, trying to free myself from the hypnotic grip of the vision, desperate not to let their pain sink into my bones.

“No!” I shouted, and instantly, the visions became a cacophony, dissonant screams fueling the dread choking my throat. “We can’t let this happen!”

“Focus, Alex!” Jasmine’s voice sliced through the chaos, electricity crackling between us as she pulled me back to the present. “You need to stay grounded!”

I stumbled back from the altar, my pulse jumped in my throat as I gasped for air. I opened my eyes, snapping back to our surroundings. The chamber was unchanged, yet I could still hear the echoes of war ringing in my ears.

“What the hell was that?” Kai growled as he clasped my shoulder tightly. “That wasn’t just a prophecy. It felt real. Too real.”

“It’s a warning,” I replied, my mind struggling to absorb the onslaught of information. “Malakar is gathering his forces. We need to strategize—prepare ourselves for the worst.”

“Prepare for what? What do we do?” Jasmine asked, though there was an undertone of dread creeping into her normally unshakeable resolve.

“A counter-offensive,” I said. “We have to unite the other players—we can’t let Malakar’s forces overwhelm us. We need allies, and we have to find a way to cleanse the corruption.”

“Are you hearing yourself, Alex?” Jasmine snapped, and I could see the spark of anger flare in her dark eyes. “You really think that’s going to work against an army?”

“I don’t know, Jasmine!" The frustration surged in my chest, a constriction squeezing my insides. "But we have to try! I won’t just sit back and watch everything we’ve fought for crumble.”

As Kai grunted his agreement, Jasmine softened slightly, her fiery demeanor wavering. “Alright. Then what’s our plan?”

“First, let’s get out of here, regroup, and analyze what we need. We have some unique skills; we can craft tools, even artifacts. Whatever it takes to even the odds.” I felt the flicker of hope gradually igniting in the pit of my stomach.

“Right,” Jasmine nodded, and for the first time, I saw a hint of genuine confidence in her expression. “Let’s go then. We can’t waste time.”

We made our way back through the cavern, stepping cautiously over the remnants of the previous encounter. As we entered the main chamber, a low rumble echoed through the walls, vibrating beneath our feet. I went very still.

“Did you feel that?” I asked, looking back at the others, fear threading through my voice.

“Yeah,” Kai’s brows knitted together. “Something’s not right.”

In that moment, a notification pinged in my mind, surfacing through the chaos like a beacon. My heart raced as a window flew open:

WARNING: Malakar’s forces are gathering at the Forgotten Hills. Prepare for imminent conflict.

“What now?” Jasmine asked, her tone clipped, glancing between the notification and my face.

“Now we prepare for battle,” I said, my voice laced with determination. “We fight, we forge alliances, and we customize ourselves as best we can. If his army is gathering, we need to strike first.”

“That means we’ve got to get moving,” Kai rumbled, already swinging his weapon from his back, a glint of excitement evident in his eyes as the adrenaline surged.

Jasmine's expression matched his, the thrill of a challenge awakening something deep within her. “I’ll start reaching out to anyone I can trust. We might need them more than ever.”

“Good thinking,” I said. “I’ll identify resources and analyze our skill sets. If we can double down on synergy, we could have an advantage.”

As we set our minds on what lay ahead, I could feel the weight of my decisions pressing in. The thrill of anticipation coursed through my veins, but I couldn’t shake the terror of what awaited us. Malakar was no mere foe; he was a master tactician.

Before we left the dungeon entirely, I called them back. “Wait! We need to adjust our stats first. We've got some experience from the guardian fight, right?" I smiled slightly, trying to bring a light spark back to the group.

“Right. Let’s boost our abilities.”

Together, we accessed our current state on the system. I could feel the pull of every possibility simmering beneath the surface of our joint determination. Each decision I made felt critical.

LEVEL UP! Alex Carter - Level 12! You have gained 5 stat points!

A flash of exhilaration washed over me as I guided my hand over my Ability scores.

“Fifteen points for Strength, fifteen for Agility, four for Intelligence?” I hesitated, pausing to think through my next move. “This fight is going to require swiftness and strategy. I need to balance my skills while ensuring I can support you guys too.”

“I think you should go for agility, especially if Malakar's forces are a horde kind of fight,” Jasmine chimed in, her gaze steady. “You need to be quick and decisive.”

She was right, but part of me still yearned for raw power. Strength was appealing—if I could land just one solid blow, it could fend off a wave.

Kai interjected. “We need you to think about healing too. We can’t afford to lose our only strategizer right out the gate.”

“I see what you mean…” I murmured, slots of doubt swirling in my mind. But decision-making was a part of my role. I couldn't shy away now.

“One more point here,” I muttered, securing the balance while committing to Agility.

“Done,” I finally declared, stepping back as the improvement lit up my system view.

As we made our way toward the light of the entrance, another notification echoed in my mind, the weight of the world entrusting me with every challenge to come:

YOU HAVE UNLOCKED A NEW SKILL: Tactical Maneuvering – Increases your efficiency in coordinating team actions during combat.

“Let’s go,” I commanded, a rush of excitement fueled by the uncertainty ahead.

With adrenaline tinging our senses, we stepped outside into a world of chaos. The battle was approaching fast, and we had to reach our allies before it engulfed us.

I glanced at my team, hearts racing, the scent of battle hovering in the air, and without another word, we charged into the unknown, ready to face whatever came next.

And deep in the recesses of my mind stirred the ever-looming shadow of Lord Malakar, reminding us that this was only the beginning.
