Dungeon Breaker: Rise of the Forgotten Ch 10/50

New Dungeon, More Danger: The Dark Labyrinth

The air inside the Dark Labyrinth was thick and stale, a musky scent that reminded me of damp earth and age-old decay. As I stepped through the archway, my heart thudded in my chest, both from anticipation and the gnawing anxiety that brewed within me. The faint glow of luminescent fungi illuminated the shifting walls—if they were walls at all. Every inch around us appeared to shift subtly, distorting perspective, like the world was breathing in sync with our movements.

“Stick close,” Ethan, our tank, grumbled as he led the way, his massive shield gleaming dully in the low light. “I don’t like how this place seems to warp as we move. It’s unnerving.”

I nodded, feeling the weight of responsibility resting heavily on my shoulders. This wasn’t just about me anymore; I had a team to protect. “Keep your eyes peeled for any traps,” I said, trying to sound more confident than I felt. My mind raced through the mechanics I’d studied in hopes of preparing us for whatever awaited. Pressure was relentless; we had to clear this dungeon quickly, or we’d fall further down the global ranking board.

“Sure thing, ‘Captain Obvious,’” Aria, our healer, shot back. Her voice was light, masking her own tension with a playful edge. She positioned herself behind Ethan, her staff radiating a soft blue glow that offered comfort in the muted darkness.

“Quiet down; this place isn’t your stage,” I chastised gently. Then I turned to face both of them. “We’ve got to stay sharp.”

Before anyone could argue, a rustling sound echoed through the labyrinthine corridors, drawing our attention. I tensed. The sound seemed to come from everywhere, reverberating off the walls and making it hard to pinpoint its source.

Then, from the shadows ahead, something slithered into view. A creature resembling a twisted amalgamation of bone and shadow, its eyes glowing like embers. “Illusion Wraith,” I breathed, as memories of their mechanics flashed through my mind. These enemies thrived on fear, using illusions to disorient and distract.

"Get ready!" Ethan shouted, raising his shield just as the Wraith lunged.

Before I could react, the creature opened its maw, releasing a stream of swirling darkness that coiled around us like smoke. My instincts kicked in. I ducked and rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the tendrils but feeling their icy breath brush against my skin.

“Stay together!” Aria cried, channeling a healing spell. Blue light erupted from her staff, illuminating the nearby shadows and momentarily revealing multiple Wraiths, each one mimicking the other. My heart sank.

“Split up!” I shouted. “We need to take them on one by one!”

With a grunt, Ethan charged at the nearest Wraith, his shield raised. He slammed it directly against one of the figures, causing it to dissipate like mist. There was no time to breathe, though. I could already feel another Wraith flanking us.

I pulled my dagger from my belt, its weight familiar in my hand. I glanced at Aria, who was struggling with the concentration needed to manage the healing and fighting simultaneously. “Focus on keeping Ethan up!” I instructed. “If he goes down, we’re toast!”

“Got it! Just stay light on your feet!” she replied as her voice tightened.

I darted between two of the Wraiths, evading their shadowy lashes as I struck at one of them, my blade slicing through the air. The Wraith’s form flickered, and it let out a screech that vibrated through my bones. My teamwork was shaky as the creatures fought to ensnare us in their illusions, forcing reflections of our worst fears to surface.

“I can’t see!” Ethan bellowed, his shield raised, bobbing as he attempted to track the remaining Wraiths through the flickering light.

“Focus! Find the real one!” I shouted, aiming for another shadowy form. The Wraith before me flinched and transformed into a more fearsome version of itself, its mouth stretching into a grin that tingled through her down my spine.

But with each strike, we were whittling them down. I caught a glance at Ethan, sweat glistening on his brow despite the cool air. He was fighting valiantly, knee-deep in shadows, yet the more we battled, the more I noticed fatigue creeping into his movements.

“Just a bit longer!” I called, twisting to dodge the dark tendril aimed at my throat. By coordinating our strikes, we forced the illusions to falter under our precise attacks.

“Ethan, now!” I yelled, locking eyes with him.

With a grunt, he charged at the lead Wraith, slamming his shield into the creature while I followed with a dagger strike. The Wraith dissolved under the combined assault, its form dissipating like fog in sunlight.

In that moment, silence reigned.

We stood panting, surveying the area where the Wraiths had vanished, a mixture of triumph and caution hanging in the air.

“I hate dungeons like this,” Ethan muttered, glancing around as if expecting more foes to emerge.

“We handled it well enough,” I replied, forcing a smile despite the lingering tension. “But this was just a warm-up.”

“Great,” Aria said, rolling her eyes. “What’s next, a dance-off with the next monster?”

“Let’s just keep our heads clear, okay?” I warned, striding forward carefully.

As we continued deeper into the labyrinth, the path forked. I felt an instinctive tug toward the right corridor, but when I glanced at the wall, it shimmered, casting shadows that played tricks on my vision. “We should choose one and stick together,” I suggested. “Ethan, you’re the tank. Which way do you feel is the safest?”

“I can’t tell; they both feel wrong,” he grumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. “But I also don’t want to go left.”

“Right then,” I decided. “Stick close. If we encounter any more Wraiths, we need to stay united.” The flickering lights made it difficult to gauge the distances, and soon we were walking into a vast chamber beyond the next turn.

The sight hit me like a wall of momentum: a grand, open space with strange markings carved deep into its stone floor, radiating pulsating light.

“So this is the heart of the Labyrinth,” I whispered, captivated.

However, my excitement quickly soured as I noticed the figures standing opposite us—a small crowd of twisted beings with exaggerated proportions and eerie grins, their eyes glinting with malice as they shifted. “Welcome, trespassers,” one croaked, its voice echoing through the chamber.

“Brilliant. Another welcoming party,” Aria said dryly, her expression unamused. “What do they want, our autographs?”

“Maybe a taste of our souls,” I muttered under my breath, questioning our chances of escape.

Forcing myself to remain calm, I scanned for weaknesses. “We need to form a line and defend against whatever they throw at us,” I said, taking position just behind Ethan. “Remember to cover each other’s backs!”

Before I could strategize any further, the twisted figures advanced, moving in sync like marionettes, their grotesque laughter grating. Each movement seemed to manipulate the air, creating growing unease that clung to my throat.

“Ready?” I asked, feeling adrenaline spike.

Ethan tightened his grip on his shield. “Let’s take them down!”

The heroes charged forward. Just as I launched myself into the fray, I felt an icy grip on my wrist, the world fading away—not to blackness, but into something much worse. I stood suspended in a forest of twisted nightmares where illusions surrounded me.

The Wraiths had returned, and they weren’t alone!

“No, not like this!” I shouted, fighting against the shadows trying to close around me.

“Alex!” came Ethan’s voice, distant but determined. “We are here! Focus!”

I strained against the suffocating grasp, focusing on my breath. I could almost feel Jasmine’s presence, a tether pulling me back.

The feel of my dagger in hand grounded me. “I’m coming!” I yelled, recalling every lesson I’d learned from my trainer. I needed to slice through the phantoms surrounding me.

With one swift motion, I plunged the dagger into the shadow twisting around me. It severed the grip, revealing my teammates within the maze of illusions. They were battling through, each hit echoing with fierce determination.

It was time to get serious.

“Ethan, distract the main one! Aria, focus on healing us while I eliminate the smaller ones!” I barked.

As my strategy clicked into place, the world around me began to shift again. The shadows morphed, taking on forms of our greatest fears, but I locked my gaze on the Wraiths, momentum building as I deftly cut through their illusions. They fell to the ground in wisps of smoke, their haunting cries echoing in my ears.

But the leader continued to loom, darker than before, resentful.

As the final Wraith evaporated, I turned to see Ethan and Aria standing by the colossal creature. “Finish this!” I shouted, charging forward.

In that climactic moment, a surge of energy coursed through me as I felt my blade connect with the Wraith. It let out a pained scream, resonating within the chamber, and then burst into a million particles of light.

I staggered back, breathless as a rush of stats filled my view.

Congratulations! You have defeated the Wraith Lord! You’ve gained 10,000 experience points! Level Up!

I blinked in disbelief, exhilaration flooding my senses.

“Look!” Aria cried, her voice pure elation. “The treasure chest!”

In front of us lay a shimmering chest, emanating an otherworldly glow. My heart raced at the prospect of what awaited inside, but deep in my gut, I felt a foreboding thrill.

“First, let’s catch our breath,” Ethan suggested, steadying himself against the wall.

“Right.” I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply, focusing on the moment. “Whatever’s in that chest, we need to make sure we’re ready for it.”

With the claustrophobic weight of the labyrinth lifted momentarily, I unlocked the chest with trembling hands, my pulse quickening.

As the lid creaked open, the treasure inside sparkled. It held legendary items—gear unlike any I’d seen, perfect for furthering our abilities.

But before I could even hold one, an icy wind swept through the chamber. The excited atmosphere changed abruptly, and from the shadows surged a monstrous silhouette.

It stood colossal and terrifying, its form composed of swirling darkness and malicious energy—a keeper of the treasure.

“New dungeon, new danger,” I rasped, adrenaline already spiking in my veins once more. “Get ready!”

My eyes narrowed as I braced for the battle to come, the looming shadow of the keeper rising before us, a fierce reminder: we were far from finished.

The party screen showed a new member. One he hadn’t invited.
