Leveling Up: The First Choice
My heart raced as I caught my breath in the aftermath of my first victory. The corpse of the creature, a grotesque embodiment of the nightmares from my gaming past, lay sprawled in front of me. Its jagged teeth were stained crimson, and the pungent smell of its decay mixed with the fresh earth, forming a nauseating blend that I couldn’t shake off. I needed to focus, though—I had just gained experience points, a peculiar thrill coursing through me at the thought of my first level-up.
The interface blinked in front of me, translucent and glowing, a portal into a realm of possibilities. My fingers trembled as I hovered over the section labeled "Inventory." A single tap, and the screen filled with items I hadn’t yet had the chance to fully explore. A few scraps of leather, a weathered stone, and—my brow furrowed—something that resembled a card, its edges tinged in gold.
Inventory:
- Leather Scrap x5
- Weathered Stone x1
- Skill Token: Unknown x1
What was a skill token? My mind raced through various possibilities. I could feel the presence of Anna beside me, her warm aura infusing the tension-laden atmosphere as she leaned in to catch a glimpse of my interface.
“You’ve done well, Lucas,” she said, her voice soothing yet charged with excitement. “You’ve earned your first level-up. Time to see what that token can do.”
“Yeah, but what should I choose?” My inner strategist battled with my burgeoning excitement. In the dim light filtering through the trees, I could see the faint outline of my stats displayed at the top of the screen.
Current Level: 1 XP: 100 / 200 Health: 100/100 Mana: 50/50 Skill Points: 3
Anna’s eyes sparkled with a mix of mischief and wisdom as I pondered my options. “You could invest in strength or intelligence. Strength would boost your physical attacks, while intelligence could amplify your magical bond with me.” She flashed a playful grin. “You could also invest in agility—quick strikes and faster reactions could save your life.”
I stifled a chuckle at that. As if comprehending my past gaming habits, she wasn’t wrong. In every RPG, agility had always been my go-to for survivability and effectiveness, especially as a mage-player who relied heavily on positioning. But eventually, I’d need to step into the fray and not just stand there like a glass cannon.
“And what if I chose something else entirely?” I introduced a mischievous grin of my own, recalling rogue classes and their deceptive prowess from gaming sessions late into the night. “What about stealth or any hidden abilities?”
“Those would come if you unlock specific paths,” Anna replied, her eyes alight with strategy. “You have to decide where your strengths lie early on if you plan to survive Dante and his faction.”
Dante Blackthorn’s name sent a shiver down my spine; the tension in the air seemed to thicken at just the mention of him. We had yet to witness the full extent of his power, only glimpsed it through tales of despair shared in the shadows of those who had been annihilated by his forces. Yet those thoughts quickly drifted away, replaced by the thrill of potential paths I could take.
“Alright, enough procrastinating. Let’s see what that token does,” I declared, my resolve hardening as I tapped on the skill token.
In a flash of light, the screen bloomed with swirling colors. I felt a rush against my skin, a current of energy that tingled within my core. A new window emerged, showcasing a dazzling array of skills, each graced with their own description, illuminated brightly before my eyes.
Skill Token Received: Choose one
- Finesse: Increases agility-based attacks, permitting stealth movements and backstab bonuses.
- Arcane Focus: Boosts magic potency, increasing the effectiveness of spells at the cost of some health.
- Titan’s Strength: Gives a permanent boost to physical power and damage resistance; however, speed reduces slightly.
- Dual Wielding Mastery: Unlocks the ability to wield two weapons simultaneously with enhanced speed and accuracy.
My heart raced, the choices echoing in my mind. Each option came with a unique risk and benefit. Finesse would enhance my ability to evade and sneak around foes, but it could also render me vulnerable in a direct assault. Arcane Focus would provide massive damage potential, but diminishing my health felt too risky. Titan’s Strength felt appealing, but I had no desire to become a lumbering tank. Dual Wielding Mastery, however—right away, I envisioned wielding two swords in rapid succession, arts captured in swift movements.
“What do you think?” I turned to Anna, who was watching me with keen intensity. “Which way should I select?”
“The choice is yours,” she said. “But I’m leaning toward Arcane Focus if we plan to take Dante. Your spells might more than make up for any health loss.”
“True. But what if I get cornered?”
“Just think about how you want to approach combat. You already have the mind of a strategist; pick what resonates. But... be aware of the consequences.”
Her words lingered, and that feeling of anticipation made my heart pound harder. I bit my lip and closed my eyes, envisioning each possible path. The implications of each choice flooded my thoughts. With a deep breath, I focused on the skill that felt alive in my gut.
“Arcane Focus.” I tapped selected, and as the skill settled into my inventory, I could feel a shift in my energy. The interface flashed again, igniting with an electric pulse that sent a shockwave of heat through every limb in my body.
“Skill acquired: Arcane Focus! Magic output increased by 25%. Health reduced by 10%.”
The interface shimmered away, unmistakable satisfaction washing over me. “Not bad,” I murmured. “This could really make a difference.”
“Just be careful,” Anna said, her voice shading with concern. “You still need to strategize how to conserve your health during encounters.”
As her words settled in, the atmosphere shifted, prickling my senses. I suddenly sensed a disturbance in the leaves overhead, the shadows growing denser.
“Do you hear that?” I whispered, the primal instincts awakening within me. The rustling intensified, drawing nearer, each sound more pronounced. A chill gripped my spine, the remnants of my excitement swiftly swallowed by an impending dread.
Before Anna could respond, a figure burst from the underbrush—a towering silhouette cloaked in darkness rushed at us with a shriek that blasted through the serene tranquility we had held. The air screamed as darkness enveloped the trees, and I felt the pulse of danger surge in tandem with the rhythm of my beating heart.
“Brace yourself!” Anna shouted, an incantation poised on her lips.
Instinct kicked in. My hands clenched tight around the hilt of my dagger as I faced the monstrous form. Just behind the creature’s menacing eyes, I could see the whirls of the very essence of the system, raw energy slithering about its form. This wasn’t just any foe; it was an encounter from my worst nightmares made flesh.
“Dante sent a hunter,” I groaned, the weight of the revelation crashing down. “We need a plan. Now!”
Anna’s expression flashed with determination, her fingers weaving as an ethereal glow flickered around her.
We were out of time. The fear washed away as adrenaline bubbled within my veins. Surrounded by chaos, I had one chance to embrace my new skills and turn the tide of this battle.
“Let’s see if Arcane Focus lives up to the hype!” I yelled, casting a determined grin her way. And as the hunter closed in, I prepared to fight, the thrilling rush of our dangerous game igniting a fire deep inside of me.
Here we stood at the edge of danger, ready to awaken the full might of a hero.
His stats flickered. Something was overwriting the system itself.
